Graduation Ceremony

I was recently awarded a PhD for my work on a parallel preconditioner for octree grids. This is a photo gallery of the graduation ceremony.

The ceremony started with the PhD candidates marching out into the area where the degrees were awarded. In the third picture you can see me with my back to the camera, discussing an important point regarding preconditioning with John.

The students march on, and here I stop for a while to have my photograph taken by the onlookers. John Gilbert, my advisor, and Imran Patel, the other PhD graduate from our group, walk on. The audience tries to get some good seats in the shade, since it was a furiously hot day. Especially for graduates, in their big flowing gowns, it was steam central.

People are crowding around and finding places to sit. Rahul is making sure that Sahil does not cry.

After an extremely long initial ceremony, where everyone decided to give a speech, it was time for the hooding. This is the main reason for having your advisor around. Your advisor is required to grant you the special PhD hood of power, that you can only wear once you earn a PhD. Our row of seats was called to the stage, and so we stood up and patiently waited our turn.

I spied my family and friends in the audience, and then waved to them. I was glad they were all well, and had found some nice places to sit.

On the stage, I was hooded by John.

After the ceremony, there were lots of people to meet. Frederic Gibou, one of the professors from my adivising committee was also there.

Everyone was having a nice time, recalling stories, and taking care of babies.

We took pictures of everyone around. Min did a spectacular job at taking pictures. Here are lot of pictures from her camera. I was surprised to find Clay, but he had managed to make it all the way there. It was quite a nice surprise.

And here are the pictures of the entire family, with me the graduate.

And that was all. The ceremony was a lot of fun. After the ceremony, the gown had to be returned, the home cleaned, and a car had to be furiously driven back to San Jose.
